WHAT GRAD JOBSEEKERS ARE REALLY ASKING CHATGPT (AND WHAT A REC2REC WOULD TELL THEM INSTEAD)
At 1am, staring at a laptop with fourteen browser tabs open, more and more graduate jobseekers are typing their career worries into ChatGPT instead of asking a person. It's free, it's instant, and it never judges you for asking the same question five different ways.
But AI has a blind spot: it doesn't know you, it doesn't know the UK recruitment market in 2026, and it definitely doesn't know which firms are actually hiring graduates this month. That's where a recruitment-to-recruitment (Rec2Rec) consultant comes in - someone whose entire job is understanding the graduate job market from the inside.
We looked at the questions graduates are typing into AI chatbots most often, and worked out how one of our consultants at SW6 Associates would actually answer them.
1. "Why am I not hearing back from any job applications?"
What ChatGPT says: A generic checklist - tailor your CV, use keywords from the job description, follow up after a week, keep applying.
What a Rec2Rec would say: That advice isn't wrong, it's just incomplete. The real answer is often that graduates are applying into an ATS (applicant tracking system) black hole, competing against hundreds of near-identical CVs for the same advertised role. A recruitment consultant can tell you which roles are genuinely live, put your CV directly in front of a hiring manager, and - crucially - tell you honestly if your CV or interview technique is the actual problem, rather than guessing.
2. "Should I do a graduate scheme or go straight into a 'real' job?"
What ChatGPT says: A balanced pros-and-cons list that ultimately tells you "it depends on your goals" - true, but not exactly actionable at 1am.
What a Rec2Rec would say: It depends on how much structure and how much speed you want. Graduate schemes offer training and a clear ladder, but can be slow, rigid, and brutally competitive to get into. Roles like graduate recruitment consultant, for example, offer immediate ownership, fast progression, and earning potential tied to performance rather than tenure - some graduates are on £40k+ OTE within their first year. A good consultant will ask about your personality and motivations first, then tell you honestly which path suits you, rather than which one sounds best on paper.
3. "I have no idea what career I want - what jobs suit my degree?"
What ChatGPT says: A list of ten job titles loosely related to your degree subject, most of which you've already Googled.
What a Rec2Rec would say: Your degree matters far less than you think for most entry-level careers - employers are hiring for potential, drive and communication skills, not module content. This is one of the most common conversations we have with graduates: they assume their History or Geography degree has locked them out of certain industries, when actually transferable skills (resilience, people skills, commercial awareness) are what get you hired into fast-paced, sales-driven industries like recruitment. A real conversation, not a prompt, is what surfaces the right fit.
4. "How do I answer 'why do you want to work in recruitment/sales/insert industry'?"
What ChatGPT says: A templated answer full of buzzwords like "fast-paced environment" and "passion for people," which every other candidate will also submit, because they asked the same AI.
What a Rec2Rec would say: Generic AI answers are becoming instantly recognisable to hiring managers, and can actively work against you. A consultant who's placed hundreds of graduates into recruitment roles can tell you exactly what that specific hiring manager wants to hear, prep you on real interview questions from that firm, and help you find your own authentic answer - because it's your story that gets you the job, not a script everyone else is using too.
5. "Is it too late to switch careers / is recruitment a good industry to get into?"
What ChatGPT says: A cautious, hedge-everything answer about "considering your risk tolerance."
What a Rec2Rec would say: No, it's rarely too late - and yes, recruitment is one of the most accessible, meritocratic industries to break into with little to no experience. Uncapped commission means your earning potential is entirely down to your effort, not your years of service. A specialist Rec2Rec consultant can match your personality to the right type of desk (sector, size of firm, culture) so your first move into recruitment is the right one, not just the fastest one.
Why AI Can't Replace a Real Recruitment Conversation
ChatGPT is a good starting point for structuring a CV or practising interview answers. What it can't do is:
-
Know which firms are actually hiring right now
-
Read between the lines of what you actually want versus what you're saying
-
Advocate for you directly to a hiring manager
-
Give you honest, sometimes uncomfortable, feedback tailored to you
-
Negotiate salary or offers on your behalf
Career advice generated from patterns in text is not the same as advice from someone who spoke to three hiring managers this morning and knows exactly what they're looking for.
