WHY SEPTEMBER IS THE BEST TIME TO MAKE A CAREER MOVE
Every year it happens. The summer slows down, the kids go back to school, and something shifts in how people think about their careers. If you have spent the last few months telling yourself "I will start looking after summer," this is that moment.
September is not just a mental reset. There is real, measurable evidence that it is one of the smartest times of year to make a move.
The data behind the "September Surge"
Recruiters and economists have a name for this pattern: the September Surge. It is not just hype. LinkedIn's own labour market data shows job postings climb well above their spring baseline once September hits, with a similar seasonal ramp up visible in Indeed's job postings data around the same period each year.
There is a good reason for it. Decision makers who were on annual leave through July and August are back at their desks. Budgets that were approved earlier in the year but paused over summer start moving again. And crucially, businesses are heading into their final quarter with clear targets to hit, which means headcount that was "on hold" often gets the green light in September and October.
The UK picture backs this up too. The latest KPMG and REC Report on Jobs found that permanent placements rose for the first time in nearly four years this September, a sign that hiring confidence is genuinely returning after a prolonged slowdown, not just a seasonal blip.
Why the timing works in your favour
Here is the part most people miss. While job postings rise sharply in September, LinkedIn's research shows that candidate applications do not rise at the same rate. Applications tend to peak earlier in the year, between January and May, then taper off through the summer and into autumn.
That mismatch matters. It means there are genuinely more open roles in September relative to the number of people actively applying for them, compared with the January rush when everyone else has the same New Year's resolution you do. Less competition for more roles is about as good a position as a job seeker can be in.
There are practical reasons for the timing too:
- Interview processes move faster. Hiring managers who spent August dragging their feet are back, engaged, and under pressure to fill roles before year end.
- Budgets are confirmed, not hypothetical. Q4 headcount plans are locked in by September, so the roles being advertised are usually real and funded, not wishful thinking.
- You are not the only one who has noticed, so timing matters. The businesses hiring now want to move quickly, which rewards candidates who are ready to engage straight away rather than "thinking about it."
- A fresh CV lands differently in September. After a quiet summer inbox, hiring managers and recruiters are actively looking for good candidates again, not wading through backlog.
Making the most of the window
The September Surge is not an excuse to flood every job board with applications. It is a six to ten week window where the odds are genuinely better, and it rewards people who are focused rather than scattergun.
A few things worth doing now if you are even half thinking about a move:
- Update your CV and LinkedIn profile before you start applying, not after.
- Get clear on what you actually want from your next role, so you are not wasting your own time or a recruiter's.
- Speak to a specialist recruiter early. The best roles in a surge period often get filled quickly and quietly, before they ever reach a job board.
- Move quickly once a process starts. Hiring managers moving fast in Q4 will not wait around for slow candidates.
Our take
September will not stay open forever. Hiring tends to slow again heading into the December and January lull, so the businesses hiring seriously right now are doing it because they need people in place before year end, not because they feel like browsing CVs.
If you have been putting off a career move, the data suggests this is one of the better windows of the year to actually do something about it.
